It's fun to try playing as one but it's definitely not required. Running a republic instead of a kingdom is fairly same-y and the mechanics aren't fleshed out superwell. It's a cool concept, the execution is fairly mediocre. The Republic allows you to play as one of the merchant republics in the game (Venice, Genua etc.). It's a cool gimmick to try and defend your carefully constructed domain from Aztec hordes but you'll pretty much only play with it on once, then you'll turn it off forever. It adds an ahistorical invasion of the European mainland by the Aztecs. Sunset Invasion: I don't own this DLC Sunset Invasion is a gimmick/kinda joke DLC. I'd say you should probably get this one. It adds factions, ambitions, standing retinues and the ability to appoint commanders. I think you can't play as any of the Orthodox Christians (basically the Eastern Roman Empire) without this one. It adds a lot of new mechanics for every character, regardless of whether you play as a pagan, christian etc. Legacy of Rome: I think this is one of the major ones you should pick up. Doesn't add anything if you don't plan on playing as a Muslim. Sword of Islam: This DLC allows you to play as one of the Muslim rulers and gives them traits/events/unique mechanics like you would find when playing Christian rulers. You're paying quite a lot to be able to start with a character that's gonna be dead in 50 years anyway. It allows you to control for example the traits and the stats you start with. The only thing it allows you is to create a custom character to start the game with. Ruler Designer: I don't own this DLC I would not get this one at the start. Without any of the DLC, I think you'd only be able to play as Christian rulers (which is plenty of fun either way). I'll try going over them to give you an idea of what they do but I don't have a few of these either so I can't really comment on all of them. If we leave all the cosmetic DLC out, the ones that are left are:Īs /u/A_Rest pointed out, different DLCs impact different portions of the game so it's kinda up to you to get which ones sound interesting if you don't plan on getting all the content DLCs at once. (The game is perfectly playable without any of the DLC.) You can pick those up if you really want them, the game is perfectly playable without any of them.
